Railway Zones in India

Indian Railways divides its operations into zones, which are further sub-divided into divisions, each having a divisional headquarters. There are a total of 18 zones. Each  divisions is headed by a Divisional Railway Manager, who reports to the General Manager of the zone.

The Indian Railway is now re - organised into 16 zones. The distribution pattern of the railway network in the country has been largely influenced by physiographic, economic and administrative factors. The Northern plains with their vast level land, high population density and rich agricultural resources, provide the most favourable condition for their growth.

Major railway zones in India

  • Central Zone : Central Railway is one of the zones of Indian Railways. Its headquarters is in Mumbai at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. It has the distinction of operating first passenger railway line in India, which opened from Mumbai to Thane on 16 April 1853. 
  • Eastern Zone : The Eastern Railway is among the 18 zones of the Indian Railways. Its headquarters is at Fairley Place, Kolkata and comprises four divisions. Each division is headed by a Divisional Railway Manager.
  • Western Zone : The Western Railway is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways, and is among the busiest railway networks in India. It Has Its headquarters at Mumbai . 
  • Northern Zone : The Northern Railway is one of the 18 Railway zones of India and the northernmost zone of the Indian Railways. It is headquartered at the New Delhi/
  • Southern Zone :  The Southern Railway, headquartered at Chennai, is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways. It is the earliest of the 18 zones of the Indian Railways created in independent India.
